Perfection. Being a nerd, I typed the word into dictionary.com to try to find some focus to my thoughts. On a side note, I like the first definition which talks about the state of becoming perfect. I always thought you weren't supposed to use the word in the definition. But I digress.
I find that the second definition is more appropriate. It states that perfection is "the highest degree of proficiency, skill, or excellence, as in some art."
How is society to attain this?
First, from a philosophical stance, how does one determine the status of highest? It could be argued that it is simply a state higher than everyone else. However, that means that it is always in a state of relativity. How can something attain the status of highest in and of itself, and isn't that a limited mind state? To say that something is at its highest state implies that it can go no further and not only that but also that there is no further to go.
Second, and I return to my point of relativity, how would a society know that it was perfect? Wouldn't it need an imperfect society against which it could compare itself? However, that would then promote pride, and as can be seen throughout history, it is people's egos that have been their undoing.
Pride. Envy. Gluttony. Lust. Anger. Greed. Sloth.
There is a reason that these characteristics have received the grouping of the seven deadly sins. Throughout life they have and continue to be people's undoing, and I don't believe that any level of spiritual awareness is necessary to see this. If these seven characteristics can be uprooted from human nature, a perfect society would be the outcome. Unfortunately, I don't see that happening any time soon.

Perhaps perfection is, then, pursuing a culture that is free from the seven deadly sins-or at least, make an active attempt to devalue them as part of the cultural landscape. This is unfortunate news for America-the only one of those seven we don't champion as a positive thing is Sloth.
